SUMMARY:Nonprofit Quarterly Article - Neighborhood Infrastructures: The Historic New Roles of CDCs
DESCRIPTION:Community and economic development professionals in cities use a variety of strategies to grow their local communities\, shape their economies\, and advance equity and inclusion. As NPQ has reported\, both in its newswires and through its Economy Remixseries\, including community voices and enhancing relationships is vital to any successful community or economic development effort. While there are a growing number of new community development mechanisms\, such as the federal Opportunity Zone initiative\, many traditional approaches still have tremendous value. \nOne often overlooked instrument is the Community Development Corporation (CDC)\, which has a rich history of mobilizing billions of dollars—$12 billion in the state of New Jersey alone—and creating resilient structures within low-income communities. For decades\, CDCs have tackled some of America’s most challenging problems: neighborhood revitalization\, affordable housing\, community economic development\, workforce development and job creation\, financial empowerment\, and food access. Through these efforts\, CDCs have local impact by improving economic opportunities and social conditions in the communities they serve. Central to the CDC model is community engagement\, an approach detailed in NPQ’s June 2018 newswire on Detroit’s Sinai-Grace Guild Community Development Corporation. \nRead More Here

DESCRIPTION:The city is currently updating the zoning ordinance. CDAD’s Executive Director\, Sarida Scott is a member of the Zoning Advisory Group and was asked to provide feedback on the Zoning Analytic Report. However\, CDAD doesn’t want to speak on behalf of its members without first understanding what your concerns are regarding the current ordinance and what you need in the new ordinance to successfully achieve goals in the communities where you work. \nTo register for the dinner and discussion about zoning please click here: https://cdaod.wildapricot.org/event-3561211 \nThey are still looking for a location and want to host it in an area where land use/zoning has been an issue. SUMMARY:Sign Up for the Movement Politics Academy
DESCRIPTION:From State Rep. Laurie Pohutsky: \n\n\n \n\n\nI wanted to tell you about the Movement Politics Academy\, of which I’m a proud alumnus. Two years ago I signed up not knowing what to expect\, and to put it simply\, it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. \n\n\n \n\n\nWhen I decided to run\, no “political insiders” believed I had a chance. But I knew that we wanted to run a campaign on progressive values run on movement political organizing\, not the same old business as usual tactics we often see. \n\n\n\n\n\nAt the Movement Politics Academy\, I learned important skills like how to share my story\, deep canvassing\, and better fundraising tactics\, each of which was invaluable to my campaign and essential in my victory. This year\, the Academy is back and I would love it if more Movement Politicians would sign up and learn important tools and skills to help you win!\n\n\n \n\n\nFriday-Sunday\, October 4–27\, 2019\n\n\n \n\n\nSpace is limited. Sign up here.
