SUMMARY:CEDAM Updates
DESCRIPTION:ACTION ALERT: \nPresident Biden\, congressional members consider deep cuts to housing in ‘Build Back Better Act’ \nPresident Biden and congressional leadership are negotiating deep cuts to the “Build Back Better Act” and considering gutting housing funding from $327 billion to $100 billion or less - squandering this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to end homelessness and put our nation on a path to housing stability and equity for all. \nPlease help protect these essential and targeted investments: \n\n$90 billion to expand rental assistance to 1 million of the lowest-income households; \n$80 billion to repair and preserve public housing for over 2.5 million renters; and\n$37 billion for the national Housing Trust to build and preserve 330\,000 rental homes affordable to people with the lowest incomes.\n\nAny cuts to funding for these priority programs means fewer people safely and affordably housed. \nTake Action NOW: \n\nContact your senators and representative TODAY and urge them to call President Biden\, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi\, and Senate Leader Chuck Schumer to urge that any cuts to the Build Back Better Act aren’t made at the expense of housing our country’s lowest-income and most marginalized people. \n\nJoin more than 1\,700 organizations nationwide by signing the HoUSed campaign letter. Sign on to the letter here.

SUMMARY:NEW DETROIT'S Leadership Series on R.A.C.E. and Other Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:You may read more about the program and register here.\n\nNew Detroit Forms Ad Hoc Voting Rights Committee \nA package of bills is currently making its way through the Michigan State Senate that will make it more difficult for Michigan residents to vote. \nMore than 5\,568\,000 citizens voted in the 2020 presidential election. Ten separate lawsuits were filed in Michigan challenging election procedures or results.  Every one of them was dismissed as groundless.  Yet somehow\, members of the state legislature believe that these needless proposals targeting communities of color will improve Michigan elections.  New Detroit thinks differently. \nA new Ad Hoc Committee on Voting Rights formed by New Detroit board members is pledging to lift its voice and encourage others to speak out against these proposals.  They initiated their effort with the following statement: \n“The vote is precious.  It is almost sacred.  It is the most powerful nonviolent tool we have in a democracy.” \n\nCongressman John Lewis\n\nNew Detroit is built on the idea of collaboration.  We work for racial understanding and equity.  That work engages people of all races\, faiths\, ages and genders.  But our voting rights are in jeopardy\, especially among communities of color.  Our Democracy is endangered. The Ad Hoc Committee will be issuing a complete statement later this month. \nImportant Efforts in the Fight for Equity\nWe believe data and education are critical to change hearts and minds as an important step towards dismantling racism\, and that it will take the efforts of many to advance this work. To that end\, from time to time we will share opportunities presented by our partners. This month we encourage you to consider\n\n\nRecommend a young adult to join City Year as a Corp Member to provide academic and social emotional support for students in grades 3–9.  Corps Members receive a stipend\, health insurance\, and a $6000+ scholarship.

I couldn’t have imagined how transformational this opportunity would be for me on a personal level as well. \n \n\nOver a 6‑month period\, L’Orèal McCollum and Dr. Michael Chan-Frazier LPC of BEAM led us through training sessions exploring a range of topics surrounding trauma\, mental health and healing within the Black community. My colleague and I admired how BEAM helped create a supportive and brave space every time we connected through Zoom. \n \n\nBefore diving into tough conversations\, I loved how BEAM would start off each session with The Feeling Wheel. What I love about this tool is how it challenged me to intentionally take a pause and conduct a body scan to identify what feelings were showing up in my body. \n \n\nAs nonprofit professionals\, it’s easy for us to get caught up in the motions of working at a rapid pace that we forget to slow down. This practice served as a reminder to gracefully check-in with ourselves and honor where we are in that moment.” — Charnae Sanders\, Co.act Detroit Program Coordinator \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRead more\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRESOURCES AND EVENTS \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBEAM’s Toolkits and Resources \nBEAM is a collective of advocates\, yoga teachers\, artists\, therapists\, lawyers\, religious leaders\, teachers\, psychologists and activists committed to the emotional/mental health and healing of Black communities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBEAM Resources\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmotionally Intelligent Leadership & Social Justice \nThe BEAM Emotionally Intelligent Leadership training provides leaders with a wide range of experience with the necessary tools that help  incorporate emotional justice\, equity\, and wellness  into their approach to leadership\, as well as their organization’s practices and processes. SUMMARY:Detroit Sustainability Action Agenda
DESCRIPTION:As the City develops a long-term Climate Strategy to guide our resilience and mitigation efforts for years to come\, hearing from Detroit residents\, organizations\, and businesses is a top priority. SUMMARY:2021 Knight Diversity of Asset Managers (KDAM) Research Series: Philanthropy
DESCRIPTION:The Knight Foundation released the latest in a series of studies that examine the diversity – or lack thereof – of U.S. asset managers handling endowments of the country’s top 55 charitable foundations. The study\, 2021 Knight Diversity of Asset Managers (KDAM) Research Series: Philanthropy shows modest progress and a huge opportunity for philanthropy to do better. \nThe study was completed in partnership with Global Economics Group. It updates our previous efforts and reports that: \n\n30 of the nation’s 55 top charitable foundations invest a total of $11.07 billion (16.6% or $1 out of every $6) of their U.S.-based financial assets with diverse-owned firms. We are unable to determine the manager mix of the other 25 foundations because they declined to disclose their data.\nFive new foundations participated in this year’s study.\nFoundations that participated in both studies demonstrated a gradually increasing assets with diverse-owned firms\, increasing their investments by 1 percentage point\, or $1.37 billion in additional assets.\n\nIn a full-page Washington Post ad published today\, we congratulated the transparency and achievement of the foundations that did participate\, honoring them as the Circle of Transparency.  We believe greater transparency is key to charting a more equitable approach to investment manager selection and hope to see the Circle grow larger next year. We’re committed to continue studying the diversity of managers of philanthropic endowments and asset management as an industry. \nAgain\, we thank all the foundations who disclosed their data in the study so the public and the field of philanthropy could be well informed. And we encourage all who did not to reconsider. \nSpecial thanks to The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, Casey Family Programs\, The Chicago Community Trust and Ariel Investments for contributing blogs in support. And congratulations to the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation for their recent commitment to achieve significant gains in this area.
