SUMMARY:Covid-19 Community Impact Survey
DESCRIPTION:How is COVID-19 impacting your community?\nThe Federal Reserve Wants to Hear from You\n \nIn 2020\, the Federal Reserve System conducted four rounds of surveys to better understand the range of challenges facing under-resourced and low-income communities as an effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings are available here. This helps us understand how this crisis is impacting organizations\, like yours\, supporting community needs. \nIn 2021\, the Federal Reserve System and several national partners are fielding this survey to report how the effects of COVID-19 are changing within low- to moderate-income communities and organizations serving them. Please help us by taking this survey today. \nIf you have received the invitation to complete the survey from another entity\, please only take the survey once. If you are an organization whose members work in low-income communities\, we encourage you to forward the survey link to others who have unique knowledge of what is happening in their communities. \nPlease click the link below to complete the survey. Thank you for participating. \nSTART SURVEY\nThe survey will close at 10:59 p.m. CST on Tuesday\, August 24\, 2021.

We will be covering a range of topics that intersect race\, gender\, and class from socio-economic\, political\, and social justice lenses. In each segment\, we will also delve into our guest’s individual transformation and how they are answering the call for social justice. We will have opportunities throughout each segment for Q&A and audience engagement.\n\nThe next conversation in our series is this Wednesday at 6:30p with Tef Poe\, an American rapper\, musician\, and activist from St. Louis\, Missouri. He is one of the co-founders of HandsUpUnited which is a collective of politically engaged minds building towards the liberation of oppressed Black\, Brown\, and poor people through education\, art\, civil disobedience\, advocacy\, and agriculture.\n\nTo register\, click below or copy and paste this link: https://bit.ly/2R5yCVM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKareem Jackson is better known by his stage name Tef Poe (short for Teflon Poetix). Through his uncompromising poetic rhymes and lyrical delivery\, emcee Tef Poe\, is proving to the music industry that he is heir to the throne. Tef harbors the quintessence of a natural artist and entertainer. SUMMARY:The Financial Well-Being of Detroit Residents: What Do We Know?
DESCRIPTION:In January\, you attended a community conversation hosted by United Way for Southeastern Michigan and University of Michigan’s Poverty Solutions to discuss the reasons why Detroiters face persistent and disproportionate financial disadvantage compared to peer cities. More than half of Detroiters are financially insecure or in financial trouble. Detroiters have lower and more volatile incomes\, higher costs of living\, higher rates of subprime credit and debt in collection\, and higher rates of foreclosure\, eviction\, and bankruptcy. The University of Michigan’s Poverty Solutions’ report\, The Financial Well-Being of Detroit Residents: What Do We Know?\, revealed that these disadvantages are the result of deep structural inequities and systemic barriers to financial well-being.  \nExisting tools and services are insufficient to tackle these challenges. That’s why United Way for Southeastern Michigan is launching a Detroit Financial Well-being Innovation Challenge in partnership with University of Michigan’s Poverty Solutions. This Challenge will provide funding and support to drive innovation and catalyze transformative change to improve financial well-being for Detroit residents.  \nThe Innovation Challenge is currently in the planning stages. We are committed to incorporating feedback from a diverse group of potential applicant organizations\, front-line staff\, and Detroit residents with direct experience of financial instability into the Innovation Challenge design. \nIn late July\, we will be hosting two feedback sessions to gather input from organizational stakeholders. Your feedback will help us ensure that the Innovation Challenge is successful in receiving applications from a broad range of organizations\, that the selection process equitably identifies the most promising ideas from organizations best positioned to achieve transformative change\, and that we provide sufficient and appropriate technical assistance to participating organizations. \nTo participate\, please click the link below to register for the session most appropriate to your organizational role: \nFeedback session on Innovation Challenge design for Frontline Staff: Tuesday\, July 27th\, 11am-12pm. SUMMARY:Community Voting Tool
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that the Federal government approved $6 billion dollars for Michigan to use to help schools deal with the crises they face from COVID-19? We need to raise our voices and let the state and our communities know how we want the money spent to build healthy and healing schools. \nUse the  Community Voting Tool to show them what we need to make education better in Michigan. \nThese funds could go to programs such as: \n\n\nMental health supports and services \n\n\nUpgrades to facilities \n\n\nSpecial education support services \n\n\nEnglish language learner support services \n\n\nEducational technology \n\n\nSummer and after school programming \n\n\nWe know from listening sessions held last year across the state that Michigan families want to prioritize wellness and mental health through curriculums that reflect students’ identities and cultures\, that include input from students and caregivers. With the extra $6 billion dollars in funding\, how would you reimagine Michigan’s schools? \nWant to participate in more actions to make decisions for our schools? Use the Community Voting Tool\,  and sign up for alerts from the Michigan Education Justice Coalition.

SUMMARY:MEDC launches new Initiate Training Cohorts\, a no-cost business retention training series
DESCRIPTION:Program builds on Initiate resource portal for Michigan\nsmall businesses\nThe Michigan Economic Development Corporation is partnering with community and economic development organizations\, financial institutions\, and other small business support organizations to work one-on-one with businesses at the local level. A new series of training cohorts\, intended for partner organizations that serve small business customers\, will use a “Train the Trainer” model\, teaching them how to establish a consistent business retention program locally\, how to build trust with business owners\, how to use available tools to understand business needs\, where to direct businesses using the MEDC.Initiate portal\, and more. \nSmall businesses across the state also now have access to tools and resources to help them launch and grow in Michigan\, including an online small business learning platform offered by MEDC called Initiate. The Initiate resource portal covers topics such as money\, marketing\, management\, and COVID-19 resiliency resources by using a variety of learning methods including videos\, templates\, and guides. \n“As we continue to address the adverse economic impacts of the pandemic\, business retention efforts at the local level remain vital as we leverage an all-hands-on-deck approach to recovery\,” said MEDC Senior Vice President of Community Development Michele Wildman. “Through our training series and the robust Initiate resource portal\, we can continue to work together to create a path toward economic recovery for small businesses throughout Michigan.” \nAmber Parsons\, owner of Harwood Gold store and cafe in Charlevoix \nOver the next year\, the MEDC in partnership with Northern Initiatives\, will be offering three training cohorts\, each lasting about 12 weeks\, that will provide four strategic learning sessions for trainers.  Registration is required and space is limited. \nEach training cohort will serve as a shared learning community\, in which program participants will have the opportunity to meet throughout the year with Northern Initiatives staff and other cohort members as part of a peer learning group.  In addition\, cohort participants and the businesses you serve will have access to the online resource platform MEDC.Initiate.   \nHow to register \nProgram participant registrations will be accepted through noon on Monday\, April 19 for the Spring 2021 training. Participants will be notified by Wednesday\, April 21 as to their registration status. Two other cohorts are scheduled for fall 2021 and winter 2022. For specific dates\, visit here. \nRegistration forms will be submitted online.  Access the registration form here. There is no cost to register. \nThe Initiate Cohort Trainings will fill on a first come\, first serve basis with eligible program participants\, based on the selected dates indicated in your registration form. Consideration may be giving to ensure each cohort represents diversity in location\, organization size\, and organization type. \nNorthern Initiatives is the creator of the Initiate platform and a Community Development Financial Institution based in Michigan. They have trained community and economic development organizations serving 33 states on how to utilize the Initiate platform and enhance their business retention programs. \n“The Initiate portal and training have been immensely valuable to Niles and our businesses ever since we learned about it. Several of our businesses signed up for the program as I was going through the training. As we all know\, small businesses can be fiercely independent. One of the things I love most about Initiate is that they can explore and learn on their own\, knowing I am there if they need me\,” said Director of Niles DDA Main Street Program Lisa Croteau. “All agree that it is the absolute best business resource sight any of us have ever seen. As a matter of fact\, I sent a new business there just last week and am excited about getting reengaged with the program to bring new businesses this spring as we\, hopefully\, start to emerge from COVID. Thank you for continually finding amazing resources to help Michigan’s small businesses not only survive\, but thrive.” \nTo learn more about MEDC’s Community Development Small Business Services\, please contact Suzanne Perreault at perreaults@michigan.org or visit https://www.miplace.org/small-business.

SUMMARY:Demand Mayor Duggan and City Council Compensate Detroit Homeowners for $600 Million City Robbed from Them
DESCRIPTION:City Council and Mayor Duggan Must Pass an Ordinance to Initiate a Compensation Fund\, Repaying Detroit Homeowners for Illegally High Property Taxes \nThe City of Detroit has illegally inflated the estimated market value of Detroit homes\, overtaxing residents by more than $600 million between 2010 and 2016.
