DESCRIPTION:FEDERAL POLICY NEWS from CEDAM: \n\n\nTAKE ACTION \n\n\nCongress adjourned for August recess without passing a COVID-19 relief package\, leaving millions of renters and people experiencing homelessness without the resources and protections they need to be stably housed. Without immediate action by Congress\, 30 to 40 million renters are at risk of being evicted by the end of the year.\n\nJoin NLIHC\, the Coalition on Human Needs\, CEDAM\, and other advocates across the nation for a Day of Action on August 24 to demand that Congress #GetBackToWork and immediately pass a coronavirus relief bill that includes NLIHC’s top priorities: a national\, uniform moratorium on all evictions for nonpayment of rent; at least $100 billion in emergency rental assistance through the “Emergency Rental Assistance and Rental Market Stabilization Act” and housing vouchers; and $11.5 billion to help prevent and respond to outbreaks among people experiencing homelessness. \nTake Action on August 24\n\nCall and email your senators and representatives. Tell them to get back to the negotiating table and immediately pass the essential housing provisions in the HEROES Act. Take a few minutes to fill out the NLIHC email form above\, or find the phone numbers of your members of Congress here: https://tinyurl.com/y3yn3asc\nUse NLIHC’s advocacy toolkit to schedule meetings with members of Congress to talk about housing: https://tinyurl.com/y3sq7ovp\nAmplify personal stories\, news articles\, blog posts\, and other information on social media about how congressional inaction is exacerbating evictions and harming people with the lowest incomes. Include #GetBackToWork\, #DoYourJob\, and #RentReliefNow in your social media posts. Use NLIHC’s social media toolkit for sample posts and images: https://tinyurl.com/y3gp7ow5\nShare stories with NLIHC on how the threat of being evicted has impacted your well-being. Fill out NLIHC’s story banking form and they will share your stories with members of Congress\, reporters\, and on social media: https://tinyurl.com/y2n7ct7x\nPitch op-eds to your local newspapers about the need for Congress to restart negotiations and how the pandemic is harming low-income renters and people experiencing homelessness. SUMMARY:CEDAM's Transforming Self-Care to Healing and Justice
DESCRIPTION:As professionals who focus on the development of others and organizations\, it is vital that we reflect on our own ability to show up in ways that promote innovation\, relationship-building\, and equity. In this session\, participants will explore how stress manifests in their daily lives\, examine the root causes of distress and trauma\, and investigate how their personal values impact their boundaries and priorities. In order to navigate tough conversations and realities about race\, we must cultivate resilience in ourselves and organizations so that we can recognize racism in policies\, cultural norms\, and individual behaviors and make changes that promote healing. After this critical reflection\, participants will explore leadership\, communication\, and environmental strategies for re-centering health\, sustainability\, and justice for ourselves and the communities we serve. \n\nHost: Becca Bishopric Patterson\, assistant director for the Gender and LGBTQIA Center at Elon University \nRegister Here: https://members-cedam.wildapricot.org/event-3928990

SUMMARY:Stop Illegally Inflated Property Taxes in Detroit
DESCRIPTION:Why is this important?\n\nIt’s not just COVID and police brutality exposing racism in America. Black homeowners in Detroit are being overtaxed on top of these other injustices. \nWe’ve all seen headlines about Detroit homeowners being overcharged $600 million dollars in property taxes. No community should be hit with such unjust bills and least of all a city with 40 percent of residents struggling in poverty. Detroit has one of the highest property tax foreclosure rates of any city since the Great Depression. \nA recent University of Chicago study shows that\, even after Mayor Duggan tried to fix the problem\, the City is still overcharging the lowest valued homes. These are deep\, systemic problems that a task force should investigate\, propose solutions to end the practice and help make the community whole. \nGovernor Whitmer has proven that she can get the job done with COVID and is with us in the movement against police brutality. Now it’s time to do the same for property tax injustice. We call on her to create a task force to investigate and stop unfair property tax practices and keep Detroit homeowners in their homes. \nSIGN HERE \nSources:\nhttps://harris.uchicago.edu/files/evalrespropertytaxasdetroit20162018.pdf\nhttps://scholarship.law.uci.edu/ucilr/vol9/iss4/3/\nhttp://www.californialawreview.org/print/predatory-cities/#_ftn18\nhttps://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/11/opinion/coronavirus-cities-property-taxes.html
