SUMMARY:Expanding Mitigation Partnerships\, Promoting Resilient and Equitable Communities
DESCRIPTION:From Enterprise: \n\nHazard mitigation seeks to increase the resiliency of communities by designing and deploying long-term solutions that reduce the impact of disasters in the future. Risk reduction projects can break the cycle of disaster damage\, reconstruction and repeated damage. The guides show how communities can implement hazard mitigation projects and planning by engaging other sectors; supporting FEMA’s goal of building a culture of preparedness\, as part of the agency’s strategic plan and are strategic tools for community risk reduction and mitigation planning. \nWe will be joined by leadership from FEMA\, HUD (Pending) and Enterprise Community Partners to discuss strategic program and funding opportunities to promote equitable and resilient communities across the nation. \n\nSpeakers \n\n\n\nAngela Gladwell\, Director\, Hazard Mitigation Assistance/Mitigation Directorate\, Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration/Resilience\nJennifer Carpenter\, Assistant Director of Policy for the Disaster Recovery & Special Issues Division\, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development\nMarion McFadden\, Senior Vice President\, Public Policy & Senior Advisor\, Resilience\nLaurie Schoeman\, National Director\, Resilience and Disaster Recovery\nKelly Pflicke\, Resiliency Specialist\, FEMA Region 2\n\n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:New Better Arguments Project's Resources
DESCRIPTION:The Better Arguments Project is proud to share new resources that are designed to help Americans bridge divides\, not by papering over them\, but by exploring them more honestly together. Learn more about what it means to have a “Better Argument” — and how you can put our principles into practice — by attending one of their free trainings. Consider joining a Better Argument or hosting your own using their new toolkits. \nExplore the new opportunities below and let them know how you would like to #ArgueBetter. For questions and collaborations\, feel free to reach them directly at betterarguments@aspeninstitute.org. \nBetter Arguments Trainings \n\n\n\n\n\nTheir trainings will help concerned citizens of all types—from business leaders to educators to community leaders—become more effective changemakers. By attending a training\, you will become fluent in their 5 Principles of a Better Argument\, and you will learn how to put these principles into practice in your own communities and contexts. Register here for a free training with the Better Arguments team. \n\n\n\n\n\nLiberty and Equality \nThe push-pull between liberty and equality manifests in all kinds of ways — from discussions on the economy to freedom of speech to gun laws\, to name just a few. Many of today’s most heated political debates relate to which ideal should be prioritized\, or how to strike the right balance between liberty and equality. Host a Better Argument on liberty and equality using our toolkit. \nVoter ID Laws \nToday\, one of the most significant debates around voting rights relates to voter identification laws. Proponents argue that voter ID laws can instill confidence in our democratic system by limiting voter fraud. Meanwhile\, opponents say that voter ID laws place an undue burden on voters and reduce participation. Ideally\, elections are both secure and accessible\, and voter ID laws are one of many ways that the tension between security and access plays out. Host a Better Argument on voter ID using our toolkit. \nTech Boom Tensions \nThe creation of a robust\, local tech economy — and the attraction of the high-wage earners who work in it — can be transformative for a local economy. But others wonder how their community will ensure equitable access to these new opportunities. High-tech economic gains may be real\, but are the spoils enjoyed by all? Host a Better Argument on tech boom tensions using our toolkit.
