SUMMARY:Updates from CEDAM
DESCRIPTION:From CEDAM: \n\nTAKE ACTION\nRental assistance sign-on letter\nThe Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness is requesting organizations sign on to a letter encouraging Governor Whitmer to include $20 million for rental assistance in the supplemental budget. With the eviction moratorium ending on January 2\, 2021 and the eviction diversion program required to spend their funds by December 30\, this assistance is needed more than ever. Please contact Laurel Burchfield (lburchfield@mihomeless.org) to add your organization’s name as soon as possible.\n\n\n\nLEGISLATIVE UPDATES\nPayday expansion bill update\nThe Senate Regulatory Reform Committee held a hearing yesterday\, December 8. HB 5097\, which would allow loans of up to $2\,500 at an APR of 132%\, was originally on the agenda. It appears that the chairman did not have enough votes to pass the bill yesterday and did not take it up for a vote.\nThank you to everyone who has called or written to your legislators about the payday expansion bill — your advocacy is working! \nEven though HB 5097 did not get voted out of committee this week\, there is still time for the committee to vote on it. It is important to ensure that your senators oppose the bill should it move in the future. Please continue to reach out to your senator and urge them to vote no on the bill. You can find contact information here\, and talking points are available on the CEDAM website. Please reach out to Jessica AcMoody (acmoody@cedamichigan.org or 517–231-6139) with any questions. \n\nMICHIGAN COMMUNITY INVESTMENT PILOT PROGRAM UPDATE\n\nWhile we expected a committee hearing this week on HB 5820–21\, bills that would create the Michigan Community Investment Pilot Program\, the Speaker announced yesterday that there will be no voting and no attendance taken at the House session this week. Committee hearings have also been cancelled due to a high ranking staff member testing positive for COVID-19. We will keep our members updated as things progress.

SUMMARY:New Better Arguments Project's Resources
DESCRIPTION:The Better Arguments Project is proud to share new resources that are designed to help Americans bridge divides\, not by papering over them\, but by exploring them more honestly together. Learn more about what it means to have a “Better Argument” — and how you can put our principles into practice — by attending one of their free trainings. Consider joining a Better Argument or hosting your own using their new toolkits. \nExplore the new opportunities below and let them know how you would like to #ArgueBetter. For questions and collaborations\, feel free to reach them directly at betterarguments@aspeninstitute.org. \nBetter Arguments Trainings \n\n\n\n\n\nTheir trainings will help concerned citizens of all types—from business leaders to educators to community leaders—become more effective changemakers. By attending a training\, you will become fluent in their 5 Principles of a Better Argument\, and you will learn how to put these principles into practice in your own communities and contexts. Register here for a free training with the Better Arguments team. \n\n\n\n\n\nLiberty and Equality \nThe push-pull between liberty and equality manifests in all kinds of ways — from discussions on the economy to freedom of speech to gun laws\, to name just a few. Many of today’s most heated political debates relate to which ideal should be prioritized\, or how to strike the right balance between liberty and equality. Host a Better Argument on liberty and equality using our toolkit. \nVoter ID Laws \nToday\, one of the most significant debates around voting rights relates to voter identification laws. Proponents argue that voter ID laws can instill confidence in our democratic system by limiting voter fraud. Meanwhile\, opponents say that voter ID laws place an undue burden on voters and reduce participation. Ideally\, elections are both secure and accessible\, and voter ID laws are one of many ways that the tension between security and access plays out. Host a Better Argument on voter ID using our toolkit. \nTech Boom Tensions \nThe creation of a robust\, local tech economy — and the attraction of the high-wage earners who work in it — can be transformative for a local economy. But others wonder how their community will ensure equitable access to these new opportunities. High-tech economic gains may be real\, but are the spoils enjoyed by all? Host a Better Argument on tech boom tensions using our toolkit.
