SUMMARY:Is Chapter 11 an option for your nonprofit?: The nuts and bolts of reorganizing
DESCRIPTION:As revenues plummet due to the coronavirus pandemic\, decisions regarding the future of a nonprofit’s existence are weighing heavy on the minds of many Michigan nonprofit leaders and board members. One option worth considering is a financial reorganization like the one the YMCA of Marquette County accomplished in 2017–18. \nThis webinar will feature legal experts\, including the attorney who represented the YMCA of Marquette County in its successful Chapter 11 reorganization. The goal will be to familiarize participants with the reorganization process both within and outside the context of a Chapter 11 proceeding so that they may be knowledgeable should their organization choose to further pursue this option. \nSponsored by Co.act Detroit\, Michigan Nonprofit Association\, Michigan Community Resources and Council of Michigan Foundations \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:United Way for Southeastern Michigan and University of Michigan Poverty Solutions' The Financial Well-Being of Detroit Residents: What Do We Know? Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Please join United Way for Southeastern Michigan and University of Michigan Poverty Solutions on Friday\, Jan. 22 from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. for a virtual convening to discuss the findings and opportunities from a new research report: The Financial Well-Being of Detroit Residents: What Do We Know? \n\nMore than half of Detroiters are financially insecure or in financial trouble. This new report unpacks the reasons why. A combination of low and volatile incomes and disproportionately high costs make it challenging for tens of thousands of Detroiters to maintain consistently positive cash flow and build savings\, leading many households to accrue unmanageable debt and suffer low credit scores. These conditions leave the average Detroiter particularly vulnerable to financial shocks – more so than in suburban towns and peer cities. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic repercussions have made it even more difficult for Detroiters already living on the margins to consistently make ends meet.\nBut there are reasons for hope. This virtual event will present key findings from the report and kick off a series of community conversations around opportunities for action to address the underlying conditions that create financial instability and hardship for so many Detroiters.\nIn this event and in the community conversations that will follow\, they are seeking to engage a broad range of stakeholders – frontline staff\, agency leaders\, academics\, financial institutions\, policymakers\, funders\, individuals with lived experience of financial hardship\, and general members of the community. Please join them.\nConfirmed speakers include:\n\nDr. Darienne Driver Hudson\, Ed.D.\, CEO\, United Way for Southeastern Michigan\nDr. H. Luke Shaefer\, Ph.D.\, Director\, University of Michigan Poverty Solutions and Hermann and Amalie Kohn Professor of Social Justice and Social Policy\nBryan VanDorn\, Manager of Health & Basic Needs\, United Way for Southeastern Michigan\nMegan Thibos\, Director of Economic Mobility Initiatives\, United Way for Southeastern Michigan\nAfton Branche-Wilson\, Assistant Director of Community Initiatives\, University of Michigan Poverty Solutions\nCommunity residents with experience of financial hardship\n\n\nRegister Here: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_cV0WIqfQQEe0s4Ev1pfFFA

SUMMARY:Update from Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness
DESCRIPTION:From Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness  \nThe Michigan Legislature passed a bill today that will provide much needed relief for low-income Michiganders and support for our businesses and vaccine coordination. Unfortunately\, rental assistance was not included\, though we applaud the Legislature and our Governor for putting forward a package that will extend financial support for struggling Michiganders. You can read an outline of the package here or the full text of the bill here. \nCongress also moved this weekend on a relief package that does provide $25 billion in rental assistance and an extension of the CDC eviction moratorium until Jan 31\, 2021. The National Low Income Housing Coalition estimates that this would bring over $600 million into Michigan and you can read more about their analysis here. The bill sets rules and restrictions about how the funding can be used\, and we’ll be following closely to understand the impact this will have on our existing statewide Eviction Diversion Program.

SUMMARY:The Aspen Institute's Job Quality Tools Library
DESCRIPTION:In this moment of reckoning\, as Americans take to the streets to condemn structural racism\, many organizations are reflecting\, learning\, and taking much-needed steps to prioritize racial equity in their work. Systemic racism and discriminatory practices have led to an over-representation of Black and Latinx workers in precarious jobs that offer low wages\, few benefits\, and little chance of advancement. Leaders across fields are actively seeking racial equity tools and resources to help them adapt their practices\, influence employers and public policy\, and work to address the root causes of this crisis. \n\nLast month\, The Aspen Institute’s Economic Opportunities Program released their Job Quality Tools Library\, a website to support organizations as they engage in practical action to improve jobs. The Library compiles more than 20 tools and resources explicitly focused on racial equity and inclusion. Their dedicated page on Equity and Inclusion includes tools that leaders can use as a starting point to evaluate and address a range of employment practices and policies\, from organizational self-assessments to racial equity impact analysis tools. \nWe have also included racial equity tools across all sections of the library\, reflecting our belief in the importance of centering equity in all efforts to improve job quality – as well as our conviction that job quality and equity are mutually reinforcing. You can find tools and resources on equity in the following sections: \nIn their page on fostering a Supportive Work Environment\, they provide tools organizations can use to create a more inclusive culture. \nAmong their set of tools and resources on creating Opportunity to Build Skills and Advance and protecting Legal Rights\, they share tools that can help organizations address racial bias in hiring\, advancement\, performance evaluations\, and more. \nOn their page focused on Engaging Businesses on Job Quality\, you can find resources to help you make the case for how racial equity can drive business growth and innovation. \nCheck out the library here: https://www.aspeninstitute.org/l…/job-quality-tools-library/

SUMMARY:Updates from CEDAM
DESCRIPTION:From CEDAM: \n\nTAKE ACTION\nRental assistance sign-on letter\nThe Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness is requesting organizations sign on to a letter encouraging Governor Whitmer to include $20 million for rental assistance in the supplemental budget. With the eviction moratorium ending on January 2\, 2021 and the eviction diversion program required to spend their funds by December 30\, this assistance is needed more than ever. Please contact Laurel Burchfield (lburchfield@mihomeless.org) to add your organization’s name as soon as possible.\n\n\n\nLEGISLATIVE UPDATES\nPayday expansion bill update\nThe Senate Regulatory Reform Committee held a hearing yesterday\, December 8. HB 5097\, which would allow loans of up to $2\,500 at an APR of 132%\, was originally on the agenda. It appears that the chairman did not have enough votes to pass the bill yesterday and did not take it up for a vote.\nThank you to everyone who has called or written to your legislators about the payday expansion bill — your advocacy is working! \nEven though HB 5097 did not get voted out of committee this week\, there is still time for the committee to vote on it. It is important to ensure that your senators oppose the bill should it move in the future. Please continue to reach out to your senator and urge them to vote no on the bill. You can find contact information here\, and talking points are available on the CEDAM website. Please reach out to Jessica AcMoody (acmoody@cedamichigan.org or 517–231-6139) with any questions. \n\nMICHIGAN COMMUNITY INVESTMENT PILOT PROGRAM UPDATE\n\nWhile we expected a committee hearing this week on HB 5820–21\, bills that would create the Michigan Community Investment Pilot Program\, the Speaker announced yesterday that there will be no voting and no attendance taken at the House session this week. Committee hearings have also been cancelled due to a high ranking staff member testing positive for COVID-19. We will keep our members updated as things progress.
